The Hidden Waterfall in Billing, Northamptonshire And How To Find It

I am always on the lookout for those little local gems that most people drive straight past without even knowing they’re there, and this one genuinely surprised me.

Tucked away in Billing is a little waterfall that is completely free to visit, easy to reach, and honestly? On a hot sunny day, it almost feels a bit magical. It is small, yes, but sometimes small is exactly what you need, especially when you have little ones in tow. So if you are looking for something a little different to do this summer without it costing a penny, read on.

Where to Park

You can park at NN3 9BW. This is a residential area, so please be mindful of where you leave your car and be respectful of local residents. There are some spots that are available to anyone, and on visits during the working day there have generally been a few spaces free.

How to Find the Waterfall

Once you have parked up, cross the road and you will spot a public footway heading off into the trees. Follow that path and cross over the bridge. Just after the bridge you will find two paths leading off to the right — you can take either one.

The first takes you down right next to the river. It is a gravel path and perfectly walkable, though it is slightly off the main route. It is worth being aware that it can feel a little more secluded down there, so go with whatever feels comfortable for you and your family.

The second is a tarmacked path, which tends to have more dog walkers about and may feel a more natural choice if you have young children with you. Coming back this way is a good option. Once you get to the large grassed area turn right and you will see the opening to the waterfall

Whichever path you take, you will soon start to hear the waterfall — and it only takes a minute or two of walking before it comes into view.

What to Expect

The waterfall itself has two tiers rather than one big drop, which actually makes it look really pretty. The water throughout the river and around the waterfall is shallow, but there are plenty of big rocks around, so do keep a close eye on little ones near the water’s edge.

It is worth knowing that older children have been known to jump off the waterfall — not something I would recommend, so just be prepared that this might be happening if you visit on a warm day.

Just up from the waterfall there is a small grassed area where you could spread out a picnic blanket and have some lunch. This is not a destination you would spend a whole afternoon at, but it is a genuinely lovely spot to stop by if you are in the area — especially in the summer when the kids are looking for something new and free to do.
