World Book Day 2026

World Book Day 2026 is coming. Here’s what Northamptonshire families need to know

World Book Day 2026 lands on Thursday 5 March 2026. That means school costumes, book chat, and the all-important £1/€1.50 book token that lets children choose a book for free.

Below you’ll find:

  • how the tokens work (and the key dates)
  • the full World Book Day 2026 £1/£1.50 book line-up (with quick “who it’s for” notes)
  • genuinely easy, low-cost costume ideas that don’t require a full meltdown at 9pm the night before

How the World Book Day £1/€1.50 token works (UK basics)

Most children receive their World Book Day token through school. World Book Day distributes the tokens “in partnership with schools and others.”

Key things to know:

Token redemption window: families can use tokens from 12 February to 15 March 2026.

Lost the token panic? There are other ways to get one too (more on that further down).

Where to swap your token in and around Northamptonshire

World Book Day provides a participating booksellers map and a full list so you can search by location or postcode.

Tip for a smoother trip: ring ahead if you can, especially close to World Book Day, as some places run out of certain titles quickly.

These are the official £1/€1.50 books for 2026.

A quick note for Northants families: a few titles are marked Wales only or Ireland only. I’ve still included them in the full line-up so you can spot them easily.

Easy, low-cost World Book Day costume ideas (that kids can actually wear)

World Book Day’s own advice is refreshingly simple:

  • start with the book your child is happy to talk about
  • use items you already own (tracksuits, T-shirts, pyjamas)
  • add one simple detail to show the character, setting or idea
  • focus on comfort, so your child feels confident

Also worth hearing: not every child enjoys dressing up, and that is okay. Everyday clothes plus one prop, a label, a badge, or a simple headband counts.

If you want printables and templates, World Book Day has a 2026 low-cost dressing-up ideas pack with no-printer options, designed to work with materials you already have.

Token FAQs families always ask

Can we use the token online?

Although World Book Day states the tokens cannot be used for online purchases it also says that they can be used at Books2Door

What if my child didn’t get a token from school?

World Book Day says tokens are also available via partner charities (BookTrust and Scottish Booktrust), found in some children’s magazines, and they also work with McDonald’s to include the token with Happy Meals.

When can we start using the token?

From 12 February to 15 March 2026.
