Ice Skating at Whilton Locks Daventry
Ice Skating at Whilton Locks Daventry: A Family-Friendly Winter Experience
If you’re searching for ice skating near Daventry or family activities in Northamptonshire, Whilton Locks Garden Village has once again opened its doors for the 2025-2026 winter season with their spectacular real ice rink. This isn’t just any temporary skating venue – it’s become my family’s go-to Christmas tradition, and here’s why it should be yours too.
Real Ice Makes All the Difference
Unlike many other temporary ice rinks that use synthetic surfaces, Whilton Locks creates their rink with genuine ice. Plus, the rink itself is spacious and fully undercover, meaning your skating plans won’t be ruined by typical British weather. Rain or shine, you can enjoy a proper ice skating session without getting soaked.
Our Family’s Four-Year Tradition
Whilton Locks has been the ice skating destination for myself and my three children for the past four years, and there are several reasons we keep returning season after season. The venue strikes the perfect balance – it’s never uncomfortably crowded, yet there’s always a lovely atmosphere with skaters of all abilities sharing the ice. Whether you’re a complete beginner clinging to the barrier or confidently gliding across the rink, everyone feels comfortable.
The pricing is another major draw. Tickets start from just £6.45 depending on your chosen date, making it an affordable family outing during what can be an expensive time of year. There are no hidden booking fees, and car parking is completely free (with plenty of spaces available) – something that’s increasingly rare these days.
Perfect for All Abilities
One of the things I appreciate most about Whilton Locks is how accommodating they are for different skill levels. For younger children or nervous first-timers, there’s an excellent selection of skating aids available to reserve, including the classic push-along penguins, seals, whales, and sit-on bananas. These aren’t just helpful – they add an extra element of fun to the experience. My children have progressed from relying heavily on the penguin aids to skating independently, and it’s been wonderful watching their confidence grow on the ice.
The venue also offers specialized sessions including SEN ice skating and toddler skating sessions, which feature minimal queuing, limited capacity, and quieter music – thoughtful touches that make the experience accessible to everyone.
Make a Day of It
The ice skating is fantastic on its own, but Whilton Locks offers so much more to complete your festive day out. After working up an appetite on the ice, we always head to the onsite café for a warming drink and a sweet treat. The café serves a variety of hot beverages and delicious cakes that hit the spot after 45 minutes on the ice.
The Christmas shop is another highlight. It’s beautifully stocked with decorations, gifts, and festive treasures. Even if you’re not planning to buy, it’s worth a browse to soak up the seasonal atmosphere. The garden centre itself is worth exploring too, with its charming displays and wide range of plants and homeware.
There is also a pet shop with some birds, reptiles, rabbits and mice that the boys and I love to check out at the end.
Add Some Virtual Reality Magic
Last year, we discovered an extra special addition to our Whilton Locks visit: A Dash of Magic VR experience. This fully immersive virtual reality sleigh ride is an absolute must-try to get into those festive vibes.
The experience seats up to eight people, making it perfect for families or groups of friends. Once you’re aboard Santa’s magic-powered sleigh and wearing the HD VR headsets, you’re transported into a fantastical Christmas journey. The sleigh tilts forwards, backwards, and side to side, perfectly synchronized with the 360-degree virtual experience. Add in the front fans creating a rush of wind and the surround sound, and you’ve got a truly immersive 4D adventure.
At just £5 per person, it’s an affordable add-on that really amplifies the festive atmosphere. The combination of real ice skating followed by the virtual reality sleigh ride creates the perfect blend of traditional and modern Christmas entertainment.
Practical Information for Your Visit
Booking and Timing: Ice skating sessions last 45 minutes, and you’ll need to arrive 15 minutes early to get your boots fitted and checked in. Booking online ahead of time is essential.
Pricing: Ticket prices vary by date but start at £6.45
What to Bring: All participants must wear gloves and socks. Dress warmly in layers, as while the rink is covered, it’s still outdoors and a bit chilly!
Age Requirements: Children under 8 must be accompanied on the ice by a paying adult (maximum of 4 children per adult). The venue recommends that all children under 12 have an adult at the rinkside, though they don’t necessarily need to be skating.
Why Whilton Locks Stands Out
In a region with several ice skating options, Whilton Locks consistently delivers a superior experience. The real ice surface, reasonable pricing, excellent facilities, and additional attractions like the Christmas shop and VR experience make it a whole morning or afternoon out rather than just a skating session.
The staff are friendly and attentive, the ice stewards ensure everyone’s safety, and the atmosphere is genuinely festive without feeling overly commercialized. It’s become more than just an activity for our family – it’s a cherished annual tradition that marks the start of the Christmas season.
Whether you’re looking for a fun family outing, a unique date idea, or simply want to enjoy some traditional winter fun, ice skating at Whilton Locks in Daventry delivers on all fronts. Combined with the magical Dash of Magic VR experience, it’s an unbeatable festive day out in Northamptonshire.
Book your tickets early to secure your preferred time slot, and prepare for a wonderful winter experience that will leave you with lasting memories and perhaps, like us, a new family tradition.
